Having read the stories on this site are you intrigued? Why not read more, and immerse yourself in the strange and wonderful reading experience that NFB provides. Wait no longer: click on the link to discover more about each issue of this scintillating magazine. Of which each issue, like fine wine, in an internet-defying way, gets better with age. You know you want to--just do it!
We have been producing the magazine since 1997 and published material before then. Our political perspective is Left/Green, but we welcome truth-tellers, whatever their affiliations. Research interests include the secret state (MI5/MI6/Special Branch) & their assets, including those in the media. We are resolutely anti-fascist, and to that end investigate the far right and state infiltration of various milieus. In a shallow age where many TV programmes and newspaper/internet stories are spoon-fed to servile journalists/bloggers by shadowy interests, NFB stands out as genuine investigative research. For more details read on below. Perhaps read Steve Booth's article 'Notes From the Borderland--the First Decade' (Left at end of issue list) outlining what is different about NFB, and talking about some landmark issues. Then, check out our current/back issues to whet your appetite for the strange but alluring concoction that is NFB magazine...So confident are we that NFB is worth subscribing to, if you visit the Shop (link above) and then click on the Offers & Subscriptions tab, you will be able to receive a sample NFB (issue 7) for the princely price of 1 penny plus postage. Take a chance--you won't be disappointed....
Notes From the Borderland is unique because of:
Why do we bother? A good question, or rather two.
First, the content of our research. These are arid times, with political debate is largely sterile and 'managerial', progressive forces in headlong retreat, and public interest in genuinely participative politics (as opposed to inane spectacles offering pseudo-democracy at premium phone rates surrounding TV 'talent' shows) at an all time low. To spell it out clearly, we do not equate genuine political participation with choreographed marionettes dancing to the tune of viral marketing initiatives, whether they be the Obama campaign, Hope Not Hate or the British National Party's web strategy. We persist because we believe what we do to be right--and anticipate (though hardly hope) the time may possibly come when (with your help perhaps?) our approach, and values/standards, are more widely appreciated than now. That, for us, is enough--though we do admit to a certain wry amusement when low-lives featured in the magazine explode with apoplectic rage.
Secondly, why do we still produce a printed magazine, and not just a web-site, or web edition (like for example Lobster magazine in the UK)? Certainly isn't for the money--the magazine barely breaks even, though we would like that to change, in order to come out more frequently. Partly it is because proper research requires time and resources--the internet alone will not provide such resources, whether they be information, money or personnel. The rest of the answer regarding our commitment to print (and good production values) revolves around the nature of reality, virtual and otherwise--for which see 'NFB: In & Against the internet?' above. A section of the site that will be expanded. For us, destroying the physical reality of books and magazines as is happening in many libraries is a deep wound to the social soul--as long as we breathe we will (Morpheus-like) resist the informational Matrix seeking to crowd out non-virtual realities...
